The effect of WWII is still affecting the lives of the people in the country. Currently the Wang Puppet Government has been coordinating with the Japanese and General Watanabe has been gaining political power over time.
Secretary Yibo has been working for almost 4 years now together with Mr. He, the Director, and Captain Wang, his close friend, as agents of No.76 of the spy headquarters. He was tasked to do mainly dirty jobs for the government to get an upper hand against his own country, under the order of General Watanabe.
He did his job well, he’s good with it to be honest that is why the Gen. Watanabe trust him hundred percent. He has a cold face, barely showing any emotions not unless he is with his close friend who is working on the same side as well, which is Captain Eric Wang.
But this war needs to stop, they have been fighting for how many years now, countless lives are gone, even him cannot count those lives that he took. He manages to do his job without any deep attachment even with his friends, except for one guy, that he met in Chonqing.
Right now, he is looking at him and the fact that he is one of his targets. At first, he wanted to be in denial that they might only have the same name. But upon seeing in closely, it was the same person that he held dear, the guy’s name is Xiao Zhan.
The first time he met him, he was one of those fortunate who can continue their education and he’s under the department of fine arts. Although they are in the middle of the war, the man really wanted to pursue his dream. Chonqing has been one of the fortresses during the invitation so there’s a lot of tunnels in the area.
During that time Yibo was assigned to get any information from the China communist who are part of higher ups. The same fated day where he met Xiao Zhan, unfortunately he was a witness to a crime that he had committed, but at the same time he was Yibo’s savior.
“Hey! Are you okay?! No, no, you are not, goodness, I need to put pressure on your wound, right?” Xiao said as he hurriedly gives Yibo a first aid with his gunshot wound, he is badly wounded during that time, so he decided to hide inside the tunnel.
But Xiao Zhan saw him catching and hanging into his life, so he assumes that he might have witness what he did to those officers. While hearing Yibo’s panic voice his consciousness gradually fading.
Yibo woke up in unfamiliar room, he wanted to move but unfortunately, he was beaten so bad and having a hard time in moving.
“Hey hey, you should rest first! Stop moving,” Xiao Zhan said and proceed on changing his bandages and tendering his wounds.
“I know we are on a tough time, but you shouldn’t push yourself too hard, by the way I’m Xiao Zhan, you are?”
Yibo just stares back at him with his stoic face, it doesn’t matter if he gave his name or not, he is not from here, but he is not in the right mood to dilly dally, he must report that the task has been completed.
“Aiyoo, I’m just asking your name for formality, I’m not interested with you, okay?” Xiao Zhan said to lighten up the mood, but Yibo just keep his mouth shut.
After a few days, he is still living with Xiao Zhan, and since he is already used to these kinds of wounds, he tried to get up whenever the owner of the house is not around to secretly communicate on his HQ.
The higher ups, even Mr. He asked him to lie low for the meantime or months as they are trying to catch the witness. For some reason his benefactor comes into his mind, but he wanted to make sure first since it’s the same person who saved his life.
“Aha! You’re up!” Xiao Zhan said as he enters his house. Yibo just looks at him without saying anything.
“Yibo.”
“Huh?” Xiao Zhan asked.
“That’s my name,” Yibo said, he decided to stay here for the meantime as he had no resources and it’s less suspicious if he is going to stay within the civilian’s house.
“Oh! Finally! Nice to meet you Yibo, again I’m Xiao Zhan,” he happily said. Yibo noticed that the man has a beautiful eyes and smile, he looks like younger than him.
“How old are you Yibo?”
“23”
“Wow, you are young! I’m older than you so you can call me ge hahaha” Yibo looks at him with a doubt face.
“I’m already 25 years old and graduating as a fine arts student, I won’t be asking any questions why you look like that no worries,” Xiao Zhan said.
“Mn.”
“But do you have a house somewhere here?”
Yibo just shook his head.
“I see, luckily I’m looking for some housemates, as you can see this house is big for me, so what do you say?”
“How much is the rent?”
Months passed, Yibo continue living on Xiao Zhan’s place. The house owner is good at housekeeping, he himself was living alone but cannot cook a proper meal so he tends to eat outside and deliveries.
This is the first time that he’s eating warm homemade food since his family died due to war. He kept on contacting the HQ, but they still ask him to lie low for the meantime, since the rent is low, he’s also helping Xiao Zhan with housework like cleaning and repairing the house.
The house owner has been good to him ever since they met but he finds him weird sometimes as he didn’t even ask him a stranger where he came from or what are his work. He even refers him to work on a certain bar as a bartender, due to his job as a spy he learnt different skills as well and fortunately it is one of his forte.
A certain night, there were a lot of customers and Yibo just keep on doing his job and he noticed that a certain group entered the pub and all of them are on their formal suits, like they are celebrating something.
“Hey Yibo!”
“Zhan-ge,” Yibo acknowledges Xiao Zhan’s presence, he often visits him in this bar but for only a short time and didn’t even order anything.
“I’m a customer today and our graduation, so you should treat me, okay?”
“What do you want?” Yibo asked.
“Wow, you’ll really treat me?”
“You said you want something.”
“Zhan! Let’s go we already found the room that we’ve booked!” Chuyue said, he is one of Xiao Zhan’s friends from college.
“Okay!” Xiao Zhan answered back.
“Anything that you make seems good, so your choice, give me your best, thanks!” Xiao Zhan said as he left Yibo.
“Are you even drinking alcohol?” Yibo thought while looking at running Xiao Zhan, ever since he started living with him, he never saw him drink alcohol even if he offers him.
Since they have a lot of customers that night, the manager even asked Yibo to serve some drinks. He was known in the pub because of his looks and aura, but they knew that he’s untouchable and uninterested with them. So, most of his suitors can only look at him.
The manager noticed this, so he tends to ask Yibo to serve drinks as well to parade that he has a good-looking employee. At first, he just wanted to hire a part timer since he was referred by Xiao Zhan by ever since Yibo work there, there’s an increase in customer and his skills in bartending is no joke as well.
Yibo serve the drinks to one of their exclusive rooms that night, coincidentally, it was Xiao Zhan’s batch mates who are celebrating their graduation. Some of them are in awe because it was their first time seeing the handsome waiter.
“Wow I didn’t know that they have handsome waiter here!”
“He’s the bartender I’m talking about, he doesn’t usually serve drinks.”
“But he usually ignores those who approach him and just continue on bartending, he will only talk to you if you order something and after that end of conversation, he will just get your order!” some of them murmurs.
Yibo noticed Xiao Zhan on the corner part of the room and talking to someone, his hands are on his cheeks, and why does he look so cute doing that? His face is flushed, and he is trying to keep his eyes open while listening to his friend while the friend happily talking about something. He walks toward their location, and he gently put the drink between them, cutting off the vision Xiao Zhan’s friend to the older man.
“On the house,” Yibo said directly to Xiao Zhan.
“Wow! Bo-di, thank you! What’s the name of this drink it’s soooo red!” Xiao Zhan said, obviously he’s tipsy already. Yibo didn’t answer him and some of Xiao Zhan’s classmates are looking at them and murmuring.
“Why he’s the only one who got free drink?”
“Hahaha you never change Zhanzhan, tipsy already?”
“He only drinks 1 bottle of beer hahaha.” Some of his friends said.
“Zhan-ge I think that’s not a good idea, you are drunk already,” Zhiguang said, he’s the one who’s talking to Xiao Zhan earlier.
“But it would be a waste if I will not drink this, it’s so beautiful,” Xiao Zhan said while puffing his cheeks.
Zhiguang flushed with the sudden cute action of Xiao Zhan, the younger classmate obviously has a feeling for Xiao Zhan. Yibo is sensitive when it comes to these things as he often observed different kind of people. But Zhiguang’s reaction made him frown, he blocked Zhiguang’s view by putting his arms on the table between them. He knows it was rude especially they are customers, but Xiao Zhan is already grinning from his drink.
“Are you drunk Zhan-ge?” Yibo asked.
“Bo-di, this is soooo delicious! Why are you so good at this but bad at cooking?” Xiao Zhan innocently asked and continue drinking his margarita.
“But why are you guys spinning? Hahaha” Xiao Zhan and suddenly stood up. But the sudden action made him dizzier and after a few moments he fall and lose his consciousness. Thankfully as cliché as it seems, Yibo gently catches him even though Zhiguang was ready to catch him as well.
“I’ll take him home, guys we will go fir—”
“No need, I’ll take him home,” Yibo coldly cut off Zhiguang and effortless lift Xiao Zhan.
“Wait! You just cannot take him!” Chuyue said, since Yibo is a stranger for them.
“That’s right, and who are you just cannot pick up anyone! You are being rude since earlier! Give back Zhan-ge!” Zhiguang said.
The manager heard the commotion on a certain room, so he hurriedly went to that room and saw the unconscious Xiao Zhan on Yibo’s arms.
“Eh! Xiao Zhan? Is he drunk Yibo?” the manager said.
“Mn.”
“You know him, manager?” Chuyue asked.
“Ah, yes yes, he’s a friend of Xiao Zhan,” the manager said but he didn’t know that they are living together.
“I’ll go ahead manager,” Yibo dismissively said and walk away from the group. He didn’t even change his clothes and hail a taxi. Thankfully the pub is near their house.
“Zhan-ge, we’re home,” Yibo said.
“Hmm, Yibo?”
“Yes, Zhan-ge”
“Are you leaving?” Xiao Zhan asked.
“I’m not.”
“Really? Are you going to stay here forever?”
Yibo didn’t answer Xiao Zhan, but he mentally answered him, ‘no.’
No matter how he avoids but he’s feeling attached to the drunken man on the bed. He always observed him, he is fascinated how he smile. He likes him, so the long time that they are living together he cannot help but fall for him.
But that won’t do, he’s not a simple person that should have a peaceful life especially right now. He clenched the hand of the drunken man in front of him.
Xiao Zhan had a boyfriend before, but it only lasted for two months, at first, he didn’t mind but there was this one time when he went home with bruises on his face not just with face but to every visible skin. During that time, Yibo discreetly visits the house of Xiao Zhan’s ex but unknowingly the said man vanished after a week of breaking up with Xiao Zhan. Even him cannot find him unfortunately he has limited resources so he didn’t pursue looking for him and the man is already gone even if he wanted to punish him, he cannot find him.
But Xiao Zhan kept on smiling even after breaking up with his ex-boyfriend and mentioned that they are not really meant to be. He didn’t inform Xiao Zhan about the disappearance of his ex. While he was in a deep thought, he noticed that Xiao Zhan was sitting on the bed.
“Do you want some water Zhan-ge?” Yibo asked.
Xiao Zhan didn’t answer but instead he pulled Yibo towards him and abruptly kiss him and circled his arms around Yibo’s neck. Yibo wanted to break from the kiss since the older man is drunk but he cannot. He can still taste the margarita from earlier and for some reason it tastes better on his mouth than the one that he served.
So, he deepened the kiss, and Xiao Zhan tightly wrapped his arms while Yibo’s arms on his waist.
“I like you Yibo,” Xiao Zhan said in between of the kiss.
“Mn, don’t regret it Zhan-ge,” Yibo said as he smirks and continue kissing Xiao Zhan. During that night, they both give in to the pleasure as they passionately spent the night together on the same bed.
Xiao Zhan woke up, early in the next morning. He noticed the sudden pain of body especially around his waist and his nipples are sore, and his throat is dry. He has memories of what happened last night, he was thrilled but shy. But right now, he felt the happiness after confessing his feelings.
But Yibo didn’t answer him, but instead they share a passionate night, so is it safe to assume that he likes him as well he thought. His face flushed by the sudden memories from last night, it was his first time even though he had a boyfriend, but nothing happened between them.
“Are you okay Zhan-ge?” Yibo asked as he walked out from the bathroom with only towel on his lower half. While Xiao Zhan covers his whole body.
“I’ve seen it all Zhan-ge, no need to hide.” Yibo said.
“Aiyoo, don’t tease me, okay? It was my first time.”
“Why would I, it’s my first time as well. I enjoyed last night, how about you?” Yibo said as he sat in front of Xiao Zhan on the bed. Xiao Zhan shyly nods his head to confirm and added, “it’s your first time? But why are you so good at it?” Xiao Zhan covered his mouth and realized his innocent question is not so innocent.
“Glad you like it, but it was really my first. I like you Zhan-ge, would you like to be my boyfriend?” Yibo said as he grabbed and kissed Xiao Zhan’s hands.
“Yes!” Xiao Zhan happily said.
The two of them had a great time together, Xiao Zhan found a job in their municipal office, that time he has limited resources for his job fortunately he got a job as a forensic artist. At least he still has his pencil and materials with him since they are in the middle of a war, few people have luxury to request for a commission, but from time to time he still accept commissions especially from those higher ups and into arts.
After a year of living together, Yibo received a call from his former superior asking him to go back in Shanghai and left Chongqing. He knew how important to Xiao Zhan his job and his mind is telling him to go back but his heart wanted to elope with Xiao Zhan.
That night, he left Chonqing as well as the man that he loves.
Back to the present, Xiao Zhan was seen together with the Japanese little duke, for the past years Xiao Zhan rose from a normal artist to a famous one since most of his clients are famous and from well-known family from the Japanese Government and the Wang Puppet Government.
After some days, General Watanabe received news that the Japanese little duke was assassinated, unfortunately the culprit has not been caught. General Watanabe set up a meeting for agents of No. 76 and informed what happened. They are already aware of what’s happening and chance of peaceful treaty between the two country is at risk.
Unfortunately, during the meeting Yibo is the only one who shown up. General Watanabe and Yibo decided to continue with the planned ambush to the communist party. However, there’s one more person who are in their list that has not been killed.
General Watanabe asked Yibo where are the other two, he can only answer on behalf of Captain Wang since it was his friend for a long time but unfortunately, he has no idea where Mr. He went that night. The General became more suspicious of Mr. He as he learnt that Mr. He is also a cousin of the Minister of the China Communist Party (CCP).
Fortunately, Secretary Yibo, has been loyal to him and gave him more task, unfortunately he failed to assassinate one susceptible member of the CCP who a famous artist is and working as a forensic artist.
General Watanabe also asked Yibo to invite the said man to their hide out, for a dinner. But Yibo cannot believe that Xiao Zhan would be part of the CCP as he knew him far from being a violent person. They invited him by saying that the General wanted to commission something from him and it’s very confidential. Unbeknownst to Yibo, General Watanabe also asked Captain Eric Wang to observe the said artist.
Captain Wang was familiar with the said artist, it was the same artist who saved his friend, Wang Yibo. He investigated the house that Yibo stayed at during for the one-year hiatus on his job as well as his job, but Yibo asked him to let them be and quietly left Chonging that night. He knew why his friend is hesitant on accomplishing his job.
During the fateful night, where they met again, Yibo escorts Xiao Zhan to Gen. Watanabe’s house together. Xiao Zhan just gently smiles at him without any sign of anger and asked him how he is. While Yibo on the other hand, clenched his fist and tried to maintain his stoic face as he answered him, “I’m okay, let’s go.” They didn’t even talk to each other during the trip, but instead they just silently and awkwardly sit in silent.
Gen. Watanabe greets the artist and inform him about the things that he wanted him to do, he wanted him to act as a spy for the Minister of CCP and give him the layout of their new HQ. Gen Watanabe wanted to test the artist if he’s really the killer of the little duke, but Xiao Zhan told him to give him time to think about the said ‘commission.’
“I’m not asking you to do this, but please bear in mind that I am telling you to do this,” General Watanabe said as he sips through his special sake, it is obvious that he’s giving the artist a threat that he has no other choice but to comply. The meeting ended, and Yibo drive back Xiao Zhan to his apartment, currently he’s staying in Shanghai as well.
“Don’t accept the commission,” Yibo said while driving.
“Haha, why are you worried for me?” Xiao Zhan said, as usual he is still smiling while looking outside the window.
“It’s dangerous, I know you are part of CCP,” Yibo said.
“Aiyo, so I’m really busted haha,” Xiao Zhan said. Yibo suddenly stop the car by the sudden answer of Xiao Zhan, does he not care about his life?
“Did you kill the little duke?” Yibo angrily asked.
“Is that a rhetorical question or are you really looking for an honest answer?” Xiao Zhan said while still gently smiling. But Yibo din does not answer, his mind telling him that Xiao Zhan is a spy from CCP and the killer that they are looking for.
“You are looking at the correct person, Bo-di,” Yibo flinched by the sudden endearment that he failed to erase from his memory.
“As you know, it is hard to survive during these tough times, but I wanted to still pursue my dream to be a great artist,” Xiao Zhan said.
“You should have lived peacefully,” Yibo said.
“That’s impossible right now, I’m not even with the man that I love.”
“Xiao Zhan, I,” Yibo wanted to apologize but he cannot.
“Don’t worry Yibo, don’t force yourself, I told you before I won’t ask about your job. That night I asked you if you’re going to stay with me, but you stayed silent, I already assume that you will leave me someday and try my luck to confess to you. Fortunately, you accepted me, that blissful years that we spent together is okay with me I will not be greedy.”
“No, Zhan-ge, there’s still time! Do not accept his commission,” Yibo worriedly said.
“If ever, that I will still alive after this painful war, I think I will look for a new partner and settle down. You should do that too. At least, right now we already talked, and I think this is the best way to officially broke up, goodbye Yibo. I hope we meet again in peaceful time,” Xiao Zhan said and left the car. While Yibo vent out his anger to the passing Japanese soldier in an ally and knocked them out in the process.
After that night, that was the last time that Yibo saw Xiao Zhan, he hasn’t heard anything from the man for several days already. He went to No. 76 archive to investigate if there are some news about the missing artist.
He saw a newspaper, that the body on the renowned artist was found lifeless and cannot even identify his face due to the damage that he suffered from falling into a building and they can only identify the body by the IDs on his wallet, clothes, and accessories that he wears.
Yibo’s world was shattered that night, he can’t even scream, he just clenched on the newspaper and silently cry alone in that archive room.
The next night, Captain Wang went on the archive and saw Yibo still grieving on the table. He knew what he is grieving about but he decided to stay silent. He asked him what happened, but Yibo just asked him why he did that. Seems like Yibo is fully aware of Captain Wang’s secret mission, so Captain Wang, discreetly reaching for his pistol which he hides on the archive and point it behind the head of Yibo.
“Gen. Watanabe already told him, but he didn’t listen, the little duke is not his only victim there’s a lot more you know,” Captain Wang said. Yibo just wanted to leave everything, and he heard the pistol clicked behind him. Meaning that his close friend really planned on shooting him. Before leaving the archive, Yibo left the pistol’s bullet on the table and Captain Wang checked that his pistol is empty. Yibo walked in front of his close friend and that was the last time they saw each other.
The news that the last person on their list reached Gen. Watanabe which made strong the subordination between them and assigned Yibo as his double agent as the General is more suspicious of the disappearance of Mr. He, which is also the subordinate of Yibo from no. 76. The General rewards Yibo as his new secretary and his first task is to dispose his former superior Mr. He.
A bloody fight ensues the two of them and Yibo was badly injured but informed the General that Mr. He has been imprisoned. During that fight he noticed a lock room but unfortunately Mr. He didn’t let him enter that room. He remembers that whenever they had missions before, Mr. He usually gets information from that room and one time that he saw a silhouette from there, but that night it seems that there’s no one there and left the locked room.
As a reward to his loyalty General Watanabe shows Yibo the map of Manchuria and intel about it. So, the two move to Manchuria and start their new political career. But the after some years, the Japanese surrender to mediate peace, resulting arresting of Japanese officers and their coalition.
Unfortunately, due to the political power that he gained, General Watanabe can still freely move while in prison due to bribe and corrupt officials. When they are on the washroom, he told Yibo that he’s no longer interested in political power and somehow lost his motivation and wanted to start new as a Japanese civilian when he went home.
But the young secretary told him that he should die as a Japanese soldier and thank the General for giving him the map and intel about Manchuria to make it fall. After that conversation, Yibo left the General on the washroom with a cut up neck, and bleeding until his last breath.
“Mr. Yibo, please this way,” a certain soldier assisted him in a nearby office, the voice sounds familiar and nostalgic, but he is too tired to think of anything. Now everything is over, he wanted to have a peaceful sleep and buy some flower. The thing that he couldn’t do when he learnt the disappearance of Xiao Zhan.
Mr. He patiently waiting for his secretary in the nearby office, Yibo entered the room and give the blade to its owner, but before handling the blade he noticed that the soldier is still behind him, but he saw Mr. he smiles as sign that he’s, their ally. It turns out that Yibo has been double crossing General Watanabe as hidden agents of CCP and gain his trust to fully implement their plan even sacrificing his traitor friend in the process.
“Thank you for your hard work and sacrifices, please live together peacefully from now on, you two are dismissed,” Mr. He said as he grabs the blade and walks out the room.
